Ergotherapy -what is it?
Imagine that the usual daily actions – getting out of bed, brushing your teeth, getting dressed or making breakfast – turn into a real challenge. For millions of people around the world who have faced illness, injury or disability, this is an everyday reality. It is in such situations that occupational therapy comes to the rescue – a direction of medical and social rehabilitation that returns people the ability to live an active life.
What is ergotherapy?
Ergo -therapy (from the Greek ergein – to act, to work and therapeuein – to treat) is a therapy through activity that is aimed at restoring or developing life skills. Its main goal is to help a person be independent, autonomous and active in their own daily life – at home, at work, in society.
This is not just rehabilitation of the body – it is the return of meaning to life. An occupational therapist not only teaches how to hold a spoon or use a phone again, but also helps to find motivation, confidence and the desire to live a full life.
Who needs occupational therapy?
Occupational therapy is useful:
after strokes, injuries, surgeries;
people with cerebral palsy, autism, cerebral palsy;
in case of mental, neurological or musculoskeletal disorders;
elderly people who have lost independence;
children with developmental disabilities.
More than physical rehabilitation
Occupational therapy is a combination of knowledge in medicine, psychology, pedagogy, sociology and even environmental design. It covers:
development of motor skills and coordination;
restoration of cognitive functions (attention, memory, action planning);
adaptation of living space to human needs;
teaching self-care skills and professional activity;
use of assistive devices – from a spoon with a wide handle to a special computer interface.
Why is this important today?
The world is changing and the need for support for people with disabilities is growing with it. Occupational therapy is an investment in human dignity, in the ability of everyone to be independent, to be involved in life, study, work and creativity. It helps not only patients, but also their families – it restores faith, hope and quality of life. This is the profession of the future, which is already changing the world today.
Occupational therapy is not about limitations, it is about opportunities.
