Emigrant syndrome-“Ulysses syndrome”

Emigrant syndrome: what is it and how to deal with it?

“Ulysses syndrome” is a symptom of chronic and multifactorial stress, which immigrants often experience. Otherwise, it seems, there is more psychological stress, which arises when moving relationships not only with new opportunities, but because of a great number of difficulties that do not know, but accumulate.

The first months behind the border for the rich are accompanied by euphoria: everything seems new, fresh, invigorating.

But sooner and later reality sets in—and with it comes other stages of adaptation.

5 stages of adaptation

1. Euphoria (1-2 months) – everything seems brighter and promising.

2. Orientation stage (1–3 months) – the first difficult features of the new reality appear.

3. Depressive stage (3–6 months) – possible apathy, confusion, and a feeling of isolation.

4. Integration (from 6 months to 2 years) – the acceptance of new minds, the emergence of routine and stability.

5. Full adaptation – when the new country truly becomes “home”.

If after an hour of complete adaptation it did not happen, and you understand that at the first time you will return home – that’s normal. Head – you know the advantages in the current moment.

Moving is a cost:

• expand your view

• extract unique life evidence

• practice language

• get to know people from different cultures

• make it more affordable

I encourage everyone to know their own country, their own rhythm and inner comfort. May your journey be easy, joyful and kind. Good luck!

And remember: if you weren’t there, you wouldn’t be the same. Specialists of additional helping professions – psychologists, psychotherapists, social workers – will always be happy to help you!
