Bullying: What is it and how to deal with it?

In today’s world, among teenagers, children and even adults, bullying has become a serious problem that can have lasting effects on the mental and emotional health of the victims. But what exactly is bullying, what are its manifestations and how can you fight it?

What is bullying?

Bullying (from the English word “bully”, which means “to disturb” or “to harass”) is a form of aggression that manifests itself through physical, psychological or verbal violence. It can manifest itself in the form of:

  • Physical violence: hitting, pushing, causing pain.
  • Verbal violence: insults, threats, mockery.
  • Social isolation: exclusion of the victim from the group, spreading of rumors.
  • Cyberbullying: aggression through the Internet or mobile means of communication, for example, in social networks.

Reasons for bullying

The reasons why some people become aggressors in a relationship and others become victims can be various. Among the main factors is the low self-esteem of the aggressor, his own problems in the family, the desire to find recognition in the peer group or to follow certain models of behavior.

Consequences of bullying

Bullying can have serious consequences for victims. This can lead to:

  • Psychological disorders (depression, anxiety).
  • Loss of self-esteem.
  • Social isolation.
  • Asymptomatic manifestation (for example, deterioration of academic performance).
  • In some cases – to extreme forms, such as self-harm or even suicide.

How to fight bullying?

Addressing bullying requires a comprehensive approach, including actions by victims, bystanders, parents and teachers.

  1. Listen and support

If you have witnessed or are a victim of bullying, it is important to find support. Share your experiences with friends, parents or teachers. It is important that you were not alone with your problems.

  1. Document bullying incidents

Record all incidents of bullying: write down the date, time, place and details of the incident. This information may be important if you need to seek help from adults or human rights organizations.

  1. Do not respond with aggression

Try not to succumb to the aggressor’s provocations. Your reaction may only increase their desire to pursue you. Sometimes ignoring can stop an aggressor.

  1. Contact adults

Do not be afraid to ask for help from teachers, school psychologist or parents. They should know about the problem and can help find a solution.

  1. Support each other

If you witness bullying, do not remain indifferent. Monitor the behavior of your peers and openly express your disapproval of aggression.

  1. Education and awareness

Raise awareness about bullying, organize trainings and talks in schools and communities. The more people are aware of the scale of the problem, the healthier society will be.

Conclusion

Bullying is a complex and problematic topic that requires attention from all members of society. It is important to remember that each of us can play a role in the fight against bullying by standing up for the victims, promoting respect and compassion. Only by working together can we create a safe environment for everyone
